She’s opinionated, she’s brash, and she’s hilarious, but did you also know that Joan Rivers loves the South, goes all out with holiday decor, and thinks people should calm down when it comes to fashion? I had the opportunity to interview Joan Rivers and got to hear the icon herself talk about everything from fashion to working women.
Most memorable worst celebrity?
Now that I am doing Fashion Police on E! it changes every week. Of course everyone remembers Bjork and the swan dress, but even recently we have seen Natalie Portman in some terrible dresses.
Most memorable best dressed?
Again it changes every week. I always love Nicole Kidman and now we are seeing the younger generation dressing very well.
Have you ever felt bad about a joke going too far?
Always. Sometimes the joke is on me too. Yesterday on Fashion Police I wore this Bill Blass dress with feathers and our producer told me I looked like a chicken.
What advice do you give people when it comes to fashion?
Don’t take it too seriously. Have fun with it. Calm down.
Worst fashions of the season?
Chanel. They’re clothes are atrocious this season and I feel bad for them and the people wearing them.
You are a very hard worker. What is your advice to working women?
If you are a working woman without children this is your time to knock it out of the park. I don’t want to hear any woman without children complain about working until 9pm. So what? Good for you.
For working mothers, you have to prioritize and you have to realize you cannot have everything. While your children are young you have to adjust your schedule to be with them and then once they are in school you can adjust your schedule again to allow for more work. I remember when Melissa was young driving at 10 o’ clock at night to get home so I could be there in the morning when she woke up because that is what I had to do. It truly is a wonderful time for women, women can do more now then ever, we just have to prioritize.
What do you love about the South?
I feel like the manners that are left in this country have all gravitated and can be found in the South. Men stand up when a woman approaches or leaves the table. Children say ‘yes mam, yes sir’. Life is pretty in the South.
Do you think Southern style is different from the rest of the country?
Yes, women are softer and more feminine.
What do you look forward to about the holidays?
Over decorating. I grab the tinsel, the lights, and go for it. I love the holidays because I get to go overboard and I love decorating.
What are you looking most forward to about being in Birmingham December 12?
The audiences in Birmingham are always fun and welcoming.
If you had one piece of fashion advice this season?
When you get dressed and look in the mirror say ‘what else can I put on?’ This is the year of the accessory and more is more. Fur, feathers, glitz, ritz, and shoes that people cannot wear. It is good to be young for fashion right now.
