Often, we hear of the South as being “behind the times”, and as Southerners, we know this statement is not true, especially when it comes to dealing with our homes. Down in the South, much pride and emphasis is set on keeping up a classic & charming home, where we love to gather and entertain.
As we approach the much anticipated season of Spring, let’s make sure that we are aware of more than just blue skies and birds chirping. Let’s make certain your home is ready for the open doors and guests that will follow. Here are some tips to make sure your Southern and stylish home is bringing in the season with 2010’s top spring trends.
Back to School - Growing up, we were taught in the classroom to “Reduce, Re-Use, & Recycle.” This slogan, or way of life, holds true when dealing with decorating as well. With the “Green Movement” all around us, you can participate by using natural materials such as teak, bamboo, and natural fibers. Reclaimed wood is a great way to recycle as well as show off some old charm. Mix metals with wood to bring in an industrial element as well as naturalism to stay on top of what’s hot in the home…don’t be afraid of a little rust; it can add some warmth & character.
Get Real - Staying on target with naturalism, it’s time to rid the house of “the fauxs” and keep it real. In the South, we are famous for hunting, and it’s understandable to show off your game, but only in an appropriate place and only if it’s real. That being said, rid your home of the fake antlers, faux finishes, and artificial flowers. If you’re not showcasing the real deal, we don’t want to see it. Liven up your home with fresh flowers; it does wonders for the soul as well as showcase Southern, classy tradition. For a stationary arrangement, dried flowers, such as hydrangeas, always do the trick.
Mix It Up - Bring in some old with the new. When purchasing new additions for your home this season, find some vintage items to mix in with your department store purchases. While we all want new items, finding some unique consignment deals is a great way to tell a story with your décor. Add some spice by collaging vintage with new, and elegant with fun.
Colors & Patterns - Now let’s get to the grit. One of the more obvious and easy ways to “spring lift” your home is with your choice of colors and patterns. While neutral colors such as earth tones and shades of gray are preferred for larger elements like walls and big furniture pieces, now is definitely the time to jazz up your home with splashes of turquoise, yellow, tangerine, and shades of pink and red. Be cautious not to overdo it so the eyes have a place to rest. With this caution in mind, “whimsy” is the term for 2010. Find exciting accessories such as throw pillows, candlesticks, frames and original art. Make sure your big purchases (such as furniture) are of timeless hues and fabrics while popping in some fun color with pieces that can be easily replaced as the season, or your mind, changes.
Texturize - Natural is key again when dealing with rugs, shades, and bedspreads. Linens, canvas, and natural fibers such as jute or sisal serve a dual purpose by calming and adding texture. Splurge on a soft genuine leather chair that will last you years and only get better with age. The use of natural textiles is a movement that is here to stay.
The Craftsman - Craftsman style refers to minimalist efforts in response to the gaudiness of too much ornamentation that feels cluttered and confined- the last way you want a guest to feel while visiting. Low profile, sleek and elegant furniture is the way to go when buying some new pieces to mix with your old. Bring back the “craftsman’s hand” and find a dining room table that is barn style, or some iron made accents from an actual artisan. Mass produced items obviously will be used in the home, but never forget the creative hand. Add some bohemian accents with the elegance of simplicity and you are sure to have a recipe that everyone will relish.
Outside In - The hard economic times of the past couple of years have forced many people to bring the outside in- less eating out & more cooking, not as many trips & more entertaining at home. This means that our attention is now on the home more than ever. After a rough day out in the dog eat dog world, make sure you can come back home to surroundings that are peaceful and provide an opportunity for ease, relaxation, and rest.
You - While trends are ever changing, you must always stay true to your style. Use the hottest new trends to guide and help you find your way. These are guidelines and suggestions to optimize your home for your family’s enjoyment. If you are an entertainer, this will help ensure that your home awards you with the title of the “hostess with the mostest.” Follow trends, but always be sure that your home is a true representation of you.
